The fabric gives it a real<br />
luxe look, but I'm planning on doing another in a plain linen for a more dressed down look.<br />

Not sure exactly what my next project will be! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! As always, I appreciate that you stop in to check out what I am doing.<br />

So far, I'm very pleased with the pattern, and how everything is coming together. Here is the fabric I chose. I think it goes well with the design of this pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPxqLEiL9ahF-IumRQ0_DoOZs_4DyjFtPhPTuV-8gpC8AGbrY_fLweGvkPZHqaovAiYLD7ZstlpswpQhCi_wbo6W8Qh7FjemukyU1Iuqr35UrCmVIyeobz6d3WMtoXz2oWA2SDVO_J22Bd/s1600/DSC_0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1064" data-original-width="1600" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPxqLEiL9ahF-IumRQ0_DoOZs_4DyjFtPhPTuV-8gpC8AGbrY_fLweGvkPZHqaovAiYLD7ZstlpswpQhCi_wbo6W8Qh7FjemukyU1Iuqr35UrCmVIyeobz6d3WMtoXz2oWA2SDVO_J22Bd/s320/DSC_0001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I have most of the construction done. I need to do the hems and enclose the armholes with the binding. I also want to stitch down the neck facing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8uPRfuA_hcp698gWQBLxFeOzhoe8MwTqGkIdP1jZVkkg8E5J8TCTL4bopxPIzAIdotPhQMF_tp0hXCZKRAjVq3_9xMiWrLJz0ZLjC-HvG9oy7ZzNBfzksf1W3I58EleYmtj7xY1ItBQli/s1600/d2_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1315" data-original-width="1600" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8uPRfuA_hcp698gWQBLxFeOzhoe8MwTqGkIdP1jZVkkg8E5J8TCTL4bopxPIzAIdotPhQMF_tp0hXCZKRAjVq3_9xMiWrLJz0ZLjC-HvG9oy7ZzNBfzksf1W3I58EleYmtj7xY1ItBQli/s320/d2_edited.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If there's anything I'm displeased about with the fabric, it's how tough it is to get it to give up a wrinkle!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-PYz13eZ5d__87h-xAXRrM3T8THCt-qhm5I0zdQEqVnNW7QafeE4weEQu1lZ25t0v5jnELqNGtluq5pBrsBHajxIVQoISB88k-GZomcuP7jMTHomM4narnm2jV4eZ6GiAclETi6U6ybp5/s1600/d5_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="867" data-original-width="1600" height="173" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-PYz13eZ5d__87h-xAXRrM3T8THCt-qhm5I0zdQEqVnNW7QafeE4weEQu1lZ25t0v5jnELqNGtluq5pBrsBHajxIVQoISB88k-GZomcuP7jMTHomM4narnm2jV4eZ6GiAclETi6U6ybp5/s320/d5_edited.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm even loving the drape, though I admit it gave me a bit of a puzzle in getting it attached correctly to the tabard. Once I get the finishing touches done I will post pictures of the finished piece on Betsy, my ever patient dress form, and maybe even on me. Thanks for tuning in to my progress!<br />

There are several things I really like about this pattern. It has Laganlook elements while retaining a certain crisp refinement. The little center drape should hit right over a real problem area in my figure right now, which is the upper belly pooch. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I guess I have to admit that my body type has become the dreaded apple, so the draping and the long lines should help with a leaner illusion. Now I need to decide on fabric. Any thoughts?</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If you've been reading my blog for any amount of time, you know I always like to think of sewing as a sustainability skill. While perhaps not as immediate and primal as knowing how to start a fire, or use dried beans, sewing certainly comes in handy if you are trying to get the most out of your clothing and textiles. Like so many young women of my generation, I learned to sew in home economics class and in Girl Scouts. My mother was a home sewist, and sewing was deemed an inexpensive method of expanding one’s wardrobe.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<div class="aolmailmsonormal" style="background: white; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Expand I did! I made dresses, formals, skirts and even costumes. Here's the pattern for the first dress I ever made! At the time, my clothing budget for school and social occasions was very small and I was a student of international folk dance with a limited budget for ethnic dance ensembles. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span>

<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">As an adult sewist I have gained an appreciation for vintage patterns. I use them to create period costumes, and also to enhance my everyday wardrobe. I’m always thrilled when I find a pattern that excites my imagination. The fact that the pattern is still around (and not at the bottom of some landfill) is impressive. Even more impressive is the fact that this pattern can still be used to create a special piece of clothing evocative of a long-ago style. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<div class="aolmailmsonormal" style="background: white; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I scour estate sales, thrift shops, and yard sales to acquire vintage patterns. I keep many for myself, and I also sell them in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SeamsSustainable" target="_blank">Seams Sustainable Etsy shop</a>. When I get the patterns home, I open each one and go through it to ascertain that all the pieces and directions are present. Some vintage beauties are very challenging because of unprinted pattern pieces and minimal directions. In times when many women could sew, the directions seem very minimal compared to the step by step directions included with more modern patterns! Also, they require some special handling due to age!<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="aolmailmsonormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="aolmailmsonormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I then consider whether the pattern will withstand use. Tissue paper is usually acid-free and remarkably resilient. However, the pattern’s past use and storage play a role in its present utility. I have encountered pattern pieces crumpled into the envelope, wadded together from water damage, and torn either due to past pinning or due to labeling perforations becoming tears. In all of these cases, I very gently peel back the onion layers and try to separate the pieces. Some patterns will just not be salvageable, but most I find I can gently separate. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="aolmailmsonormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="aolmailmsonormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Once I’m sure that everything is present and can be separated, I decide whether to keep a pattern or resell. Though grading a pattern up is very doable, I generally only keep patterns close to my measurements unless I am seeking a challenge. My sewing time is short enough without adding complex fitting problems! <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="aolmailmsonormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="aolmailmsonormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Whether I am reselling the pattern, or keeping it, I next flatten the pattern, either to fold it back into the envelope or to use it. For this, I will often use my iron, on a very low dry setting. If the pattern seems fragile, and I plan to use it, tracing it onto newer tissue, exam table paper, or other pattern paper will help to preserve the original for posterity. If the pattern is made of sterner stuff, I recommend using pattern weights instead of pins to keep your pattern intact.</span><span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Enjoy your summer sewing! Do you sew with vintage patterns? If so, what methods do you use to preserve them?</span></span><br />

A few notes on the result. The pattern was very easy to use and the directions were clear. The picture on the envelope is a very accurate depiction of how this blouse fits and hangs on the body. Can I say, there's quite a bit of wearing ease here! It's a very slouchy, casual look. If you wanted something a little more formal, or form fitting, it would be very easy to adjust the pattern along the seam lines. Here's a picture of the completed blouse, gracing my trusty dressform, Betsy. </div>

She wears it well! Overall I'm pleased with the result, though I think I may make it again, perhaps a size smaller. It will be cool and breezy while providing office-appropriate coverage. Thanks for viewing my result.</div>

I'm not exactly sure what's on deck next. Maybe a nice summery dress! What are you sewing this summer?</div>

My local Dollar Tree is a mixed bag. Certainly not as much fun stuff as is depicted on those haul vlogs on YouTube, but still some intriguing things. For instance, I picked up six spools of burlap ribbon and a wire wreath form.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRWIjEK6JM7lpwLeBNmb_auKZnxVkAyzigSgIxu1fJiBbWSRJFA2yUrRP_ecDi5h6Jt26KR4v92mFoXHkMb5-km146qWLpX8TppuibDlaafh_EuKyLCSogJX06O_91LWcwNCenxU0TjFSa/s1600/ribbon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1295" data-original-width="1600" height="259" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRWIjEK6JM7lpwLeBNmb_auKZnxVkAyzigSgIxu1fJiBbWSRJFA2yUrRP_ecDi5h6Jt26KR4v92mFoXHkMb5-km146qWLpX8TppuibDlaafh_EuKyLCSogJX06O_91LWcwNCenxU0TjFSa/s320/ribbon.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The resulting wreath came out quite nice, so for $7 I was able to add a nice accent to my door!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6FDcWP9Rv6uAtyuX9O32Q-ltJJUcTXtBATXBAxvc3mzjKt3XZX1udcm0BcSxJApu4XST_DwA_KogxCWO_NU3MFOeqQ6MffVBCd1unz5RW-cS4maYp0ucIbWvE2BT8UI00AD2j_wlpQV9p/s1600/wreath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1352" data-original-width="1600" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6FDcWP9Rv6uAtyuX9O32Q-ltJJUcTXtBATXBAxvc3mzjKt3XZX1udcm0BcSxJApu4XST_DwA_KogxCWO_NU3MFOeqQ6MffVBCd1unz5RW-cS4maYp0ucIbWvE2BT8UI00AD2j_wlpQV9p/s320/wreath.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm pretty happy with my dollar store craft. The other thing I've done is repair a pet bed for some friends. I am looking forward to completing my blouse as soon as my seam tape arrives! Until then, enjoy your Spring!<br />

To quote their about section, "<span style="background-color: white;">HotPatterns is an independent sewing pattern company, started in 2005, and run by two Londoners who have somehow found themselves living & working in the steamy south-west of Florida". I was first introduced to the company's work through some free patterns but then began to look more deeply to find a very stylish line.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I recently purchased Hot Patterns 1226, described as a T-shirt/blouse hybrid, the "perfect mix of comfy T and dressy blouse".</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJU9A2CJZvdnccL8hu0ej1sm9LGy3iNH5rkYdhzyj8Fp3R9k99V5JLDAYPVx62GVFM3TT6f0uNgegwRfj6dOCEfVPxfz4Bn2ZvJw0PlR_oyW3va6JxRxyn45NQq_PsNxU_SQvtewFdqJfI/s1600/HP1226.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="985" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJU9A2CJZvdnccL8hu0ej1sm9LGy3iNH5rkYdhzyj8Fp3R9k99V5JLDAYPVx62GVFM3TT6f0uNgegwRfj6dOCEfVPxfz4Bn2ZvJw0PlR_oyW3va6JxRxyn45NQq_PsNxU_SQvtewFdqJfI/s320/HP1226.jpg" width="246" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here is the fabric I have selected to make this top from:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhT-D7q-rKCrFCB3hANu3-v2msI3tdJsj6cziOGKkM83PpgPp-1FnAT4RU_I4-7JeeW48CTFzVnWmQKCAWvx42_UwnVLulWQeorMUKIgwOiY3ajk_R4zpKjPKU0gUxTv2TfLq4z7fdezDU/s1600/1226+fabric.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1064" data-original-width="1600" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhT-D7q-rKCrFCB3hANu3-v2msI3tdJsj6cziOGKkM83PpgPp-1FnAT4RU_I4-7JeeW48CTFzVnWmQKCAWvx42_UwnVLulWQeorMUKIgwOiY3ajk_R4zpKjPKU0gUxTv2TfLq4z7fdezDU/s320/1226+fabric.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The fabric is drapey and relaxed. It will be gorgeous made up as this blouse. Unfortunately, it was stored in a bit of a ball, so I spent a whole evening pressing out creases so that I can cut it, hopefully, this weekend. I could also see doing this again in a plain color to maximize the number of bottoms with which it can be worn.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
I've been hard at work reopening my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SeamsSustainable" target="_blank">Etsy Shop</a>. I'm very pleased to have about 150 items posted! Mostly sewing patterns, but a few other items as well!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Like this really cool mid-century sewing box. I picked this up at a thrift store, and I'm really hoping it finds a terrific new home!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I am constantly acquiring new patterns at yard sales, estate sales, thrift shops, etc. Many are simply intended for resale, but there are very many I actually have to argue with myself to part with! Sometimes I promise myself that if a pattern is not re-homed when the listing expires I can keep it! Here are a few of the ones I love:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I also buy a lot of sewing references. Here's one I liked so much, I bought it twice! The duplicate is in my shop (oops).<br />

I'd really love it if you'd stop by the Etsy shop! Please let me know if there's anything you have been looking for, that perhaps I can find for you!<br />

It's been a very long time since I've sewn anything, and I'm itching to get back on board. In all fairness, it was a rough year. Way too complicated to get into here, but trust me...<br />

I'm starting out 2018 with essentially the same goals I started in 2017. Since I accomplished none of them, it's do-over time! I'm really excited to be setting my sewing area up for some great projects for 2018. I'm also happy to be reopening my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SeamsSustainable" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a>, where I'll once again be selling some great vintage patterns, notions, and books!<br />

I had some great sewing projects during the year, but it didn't feel like enough sewing time. I'm looking forward to sewing more in 2017. Here are my sewing goals for the year.<br />
<br />
1. Focus on upcycling. I continue to be excited by reusing textiles from cast off clothing and homegoods. I like a look that smoothly incorporates castoffs so that the finished product does not look too disjointed or over-planned.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD4hyphenhyphenlW7SPaAz6FG3LnCShq1xXMzFpX5a7huhPmYBGS2cRgzk9wvEpreh5FM8-UVKMQVf8-oX2faMi0PmJIT7XbEK_NwDmRe65WBOFi_QnxSTP-4G1iKEXUA-PvCtiN32kWlyKIJfEE2uj/s1600/dress1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD4hyphenhyphenlW7SPaAz6FG3LnCShq1xXMzFpX5a7huhPmYBGS2cRgzk9wvEpreh5FM8-UVKMQVf8-oX2faMi0PmJIT7XbEK_NwDmRe65WBOFi_QnxSTP-4G1iKEXUA-PvCtiN32kWlyKIJfEE2uj/s320/dress1.jpg" width="254" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
2. Lagenlook. Let's face facts - I'm over 50 and I've been reading a few articles lately about styles that should be retired from my wardrobe. Also, at the New Year's gala I attended, I couldn't help but notice a striking, slim woman wearing a lovely teal strapless evening gown. She was probably in her 60s. Though the dress fit nicely, it looked as though her back and shoulders were melting over the bodice of her gown. Her skin was too slack to rock the strapless look. Because of this experience, as well as my recent reading, I'm always on the lookout for designs that will flatter an aging figure. The term lagenlook comes from German and means "layered look". It can be done sleek and businesslike or ruffly and boho. I've been interested for a while in adding more of these pieces to my closet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5c3R2adRv4XyJYe1bPyPJi444NCvvgmR226Fr8yfuPp6agIoE-bNx_3kFfT9cGMII9hrn0YCFGrTAGgrJZx5l9L8O7FhS3e-BVxcAQ7jZlNVPdO47fhHw5IyLJrpPWI8DDFkkxych2Zh9/s1600/tunic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5c3R2adRv4XyJYe1bPyPJi444NCvvgmR226Fr8yfuPp6agIoE-bNx_3kFfT9cGMII9hrn0YCFGrTAGgrJZx5l9L8O7FhS3e-BVxcAQ7jZlNVPdO47fhHw5IyLJrpPWI8DDFkkxych2Zh9/s320/tunic.jpg" width="227" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWDlhp7QohBTHX1hie_f-3ADRvxUaT5xWFD7C3nc_7e_5P_fXQSXUwnAvcBiYjuDLq98ABtjGq-xSBY3Z2fcQlDxP-Y-oj4qPBwLaSohXN_nf2YnCQpV22LcJGnqDkarWPpVTQH3s_klRx/s1600/tunic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWDlhp7QohBTHX1hie_f-3ADRvxUaT5xWFD7C3nc_7e_5P_fXQSXUwnAvcBiYjuDLq98ABtjGq-xSBY3Z2fcQlDxP-Y-oj4qPBwLaSohXN_nf2YnCQpV22LcJGnqDkarWPpVTQH3s_klRx/s320/tunic.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
3. Vintage! Vintage looks are always inspiring, I love to "play dress-up", but I also look for vintage patterns that can be worn for everyday use. Edwardian fashion, the jazz age and mod 60s looks are all of interest to me now.<br />
<br />

4. Perfecting techniques. Another goal for this year's sewing is to work on perfecting some of the techniques I've used before to make sewing even more enjoyable. Rolled hems, blind hems, lightweight fabrics, knits, hand stitched buttonholes and flawless zippers are easily called to mind examples.<br />

I became interested in Corticelli silk thread when I acquired a box of it in an old sewing basket. If you haven’t noticed by now, I am a scavenger for everything sewing when I go to garage sales, estate sales and other purveyors of old things. Despite the vintage nature of the thread, as evidenced by the neat wooden spools, I could not believe the luster and the depth of the colors.<br />

Since that first acquisition, I’ve amassed quite a little collection of these spools. Once you start collecting something, it seems as though the universe arranges for you to have more of it, or make you more aware of it, or something. Another of my interests is in advertising ephemera, particularly of the Victorian era. I started to notice ephemera related to Corticelli threads popping up on Pinterest, on boards related to sewing, crafting, and advertising history.<br />

The company began in the 1830s in Florence, Massachusetts. Today, we certainly never think of Massachusetts, or any other state in the Union, as being producers of silk. At one time, this area was very much the center of sericulture in the US. At the time it was the Nonotuck Company. Some time later the name Corticelli was adopted. Corticelli was not the name of any of the principals in the company but is thought to have been adopted to create an association in the mind of the consumer with Italy, then a powerhouse in the silk industry, renowned for quality.<br />

I would love to spend more time sewing. I have so many plans rattling around in my head for projects, and have collected so many patterns I want to use. I had a few spare hours the other day, so I put them to good use in the sewing studio.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
Another of my loves beyond straight sewing is the upcycling of the vintage linens I collect during my thrift shopping adventures. I came across this beautiful jacquard tablecloth, with an intricately woven floral pattern, some time back. I loved the ivory color and the drape of the fabric. My plan had been to turn it into a tunic top. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixh_X1l5SyHrjbxGJGv5EkY495q7rygOWZ9Koc7_mtyL7ZbroYb3lNRbJhOGgX7oP6mU7xslDPbO3RPKHe6Pi2UcBeyCQvi5AOwp99oBhf-a_lr0JGR1gI1FzTGpQKOAqG5WW_jHxLzSPK/s1600/DSC_0007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixh_X1l5SyHrjbxGJGv5EkY495q7rygOWZ9Koc7_mtyL7ZbroYb3lNRbJhOGgX7oP6mU7xslDPbO3RPKHe6Pi2UcBeyCQvi5AOwp99oBhf-a_lr0JGR1gI1FzTGpQKOAqG5WW_jHxLzSPK/s320/DSC_0007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
I used a pin from my Pinterest board, <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/deeca1/sew-inspired/" target="_blank">Sew Inspired</a>, as my inspiration. It’s a picture of a cutting layout for a tunic top. The only measurement I used was my bust measurement, to which I added 2 inches for ease. I used a bateau neckline and self drafted a facing from a linen table scarf (or altar cloth?). I elected not to embellish the resulting top because I felt that the pattern woven into the fabric was such a beautiful and subtle statement that I did not want to overwhelm it with trim.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
Here is the resulting top. I am really looking forward to wearing it soon. I think it could be dressed up or down depending on the occasion and the accessories.</div>

So I got out a pattern I'd done before. I had some black linen laying about and I thought it would look nice as a jacket. I used Burda 8630, which is at least 14 or 15 years old. The first time I made is was in 2002 and I think it had been hanging around for a while before I actually made it. I eventually get around to making things, but often not right away! Here's the envelope picture:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj39fFGWN1vmJj4qjcRqOayavWjODyGaemWINQlqcUSM9nh3KdrP98UC7jj4B00ZSorcsuZd_3ZJJ0qglgJHRZ1seniEFxouaqKzfOFkHTsD6vHwzfkEVIp1q1J9zFFKA4z1KESPwCbXjz6/s1600/8630.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj39fFGWN1vmJj4qjcRqOayavWjODyGaemWINQlqcUSM9nh3KdrP98UC7jj4B00ZSorcsuZd_3ZJJ0qglgJHRZ1seniEFxouaqKzfOFkHTsD6vHwzfkEVIp1q1J9zFFKA4z1KESPwCbXjz6/s320/8630.jpg" width="181" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a very loose and roomy jacket, best made with a fabric with a little bit of drape, but some structure, too. The linen worked out quite well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbX8izZhsZywKeVenBjZjsVWL1ZMEqiToJroKUvjrz6oWegmP1umO4Xl8rubghhU9tted_boPol-WsnFeWhIKmorR4iyekzGZ-I_YTRE2EFmLLYboMPLfmUARlzUuvNPHfQrfqjir3bg6g/s1600/jacket1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbX8izZhsZywKeVenBjZjsVWL1ZMEqiToJroKUvjrz6oWegmP1umO4Xl8rubghhU9tted_boPol-WsnFeWhIKmorR4iyekzGZ-I_YTRE2EFmLLYboMPLfmUARlzUuvNPHfQrfqjir3bg6g/s320/jacket1.jpg" width="190" /></a></div>
<br />
It looks nice on Betsy, my trusty dress form, but you can see how loose it really is. I may move the button over so it doesn't hang off like on a little girl playing dress up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid8f09G1MqH9P06CMNdRac2bhmc9goQiZBmMhHMXZKzfA8Aqwn9zQlfWyKr1XUVyWq2nGRNVRjJjWtldMw61rc93ZlK-6UF_KAGnxbQxqdeUhRL4ZK7C1Fz5EZl9B8ofg41BduK5CN-Hhe/s1600/jacket2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid8f09G1MqH9P06CMNdRac2bhmc9goQiZBmMhHMXZKzfA8Aqwn9zQlfWyKr1XUVyWq2nGRNVRjJjWtldMw61rc93ZlK-6UF_KAGnxbQxqdeUhRL4ZK7C1Fz5EZl9B8ofg41BduK5CN-Hhe/s320/jacket2.jpg" width="190" /></a></div>
<br />
I like the asymmetry. Very Lagenlook, which is something that appeals to me right now. Being black, it will complement many other items in my wardrobe.<br />

It's very comfortable to wear and is a perfect work dress, Now I just need to get some time to work on the pants project!<br />

I'm also back at work on the seat cushion and pillows that I started for a friend ages ago. We had quite a delay over a pattern for the window seat cushion, then I had a few sleepless nights over how I was going to accurately cut 3 inch thick upholstery foam. You Tube to the rescue! Who knew that an electric carving knife would cut it like butter? Woohoo! Now juat have to sew the cover and a few more pillows!<br />

I've been arriving home from work too tired to do anything precise. My commute is about 50 minutes each way most days (I work from a local office 1 day a week) so whatever vim and vigor I have left at the end of the day is usually drained away by the time I get home. Not a complaint - just the way it is.<br />
<br />
Because of the lack of energy, I've turned to some pretty simple patterns to fill in the spare moments, as well as the holes in my wardrobe. Here is what I am working on:<br />
<br />
First, Butterick BP277, a Lisette pattern. I really like the simple lines of this dress. Perfect for those warm summer days, without being at all revealing. Great for work.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfXr6Oaeidmy2i3Ogi4TvAMA_jJ-2wNTIFdOqWuGyiw1FJm2YclRb53cKDDmrXBkRTHvhHZH4O8fCDGAgRcNeFMXcaEmZ6MrtXL_oTXAgQtlVdndZIfxrszHfkXhyphenhyphen3CUgqg1Qljj6TG1xo/s1600/B+BP277.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfXr6Oaeidmy2i3Ogi4TvAMA_jJ-2wNTIFdOqWuGyiw1FJm2YclRb53cKDDmrXBkRTHvhHZH4O8fCDGAgRcNeFMXcaEmZ6MrtXL_oTXAgQtlVdndZIfxrszHfkXhyphenhyphen3CUgqg1Qljj6TG1xo/s320/B+BP277.jpg" width="236" /></a></div>
<br />
And here is the fabric I chose from the stash. This particular fabric was obtained from a friend who was given the fabric from another friend who was downsizing! Free is my favorite price point for fabric. It's a rayon, which seems to crinkle easily.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTUsHIjFaBWHFC0vhhN4V-IVpA8cL7rMAU6VJremxZaz2dUbVjLLpwf5xvrnlwVOx7v1YnQyg0z1Ygw3HyYxbYGq0FehnWRassOcU3Z0MkR2AGil9GTnCjXf9mswyhuAOjkBQ8zJCLl-cR/s1600/fab.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTUsHIjFaBWHFC0vhhN4V-IVpA8cL7rMAU6VJremxZaz2dUbVjLLpwf5xvrnlwVOx7v1YnQyg0z1Ygw3HyYxbYGq0FehnWRassOcU3Z0MkR2AGil9GTnCjXf9mswyhuAOjkBQ8zJCLl-cR/s320/fab.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then there's McCall's MP393, an easy pull on cargo pant. I am ALWAYS in need of pants. I'm making this one out of a khaki blended fabric which also came out of the "friend of a friend" box.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-apPhuxJc47iPD0exiW3EL_8Y7WUuBrHymul-9mnlUU0su7tQvrTOjAGMDKEPUYUhYThtgGq0IqTgs_JZjGiL7Xx6kVl_biPr757T1TO5T9IhGtOIbt89NF-CWcJP_ZHSi42s2v_jXAMY/s1600/Mc+MP393.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-apPhuxJc47iPD0exiW3EL_8Y7WUuBrHymul-9mnlUU0su7tQvrTOjAGMDKEPUYUhYThtgGq0IqTgs_JZjGiL7Xx6kVl_biPr757T1TO5T9IhGtOIbt89NF-CWcJP_ZHSi42s2v_jXAMY/s320/Mc+MP393.jpg" width="237" /></a></div>
<br />
I hope you are enjoying spring! Weather here is getting nice, so I've also been spending spare time on the yard as well. So many competing priorities! I'm sure you feel that way, too! I'll [pst pictures of the completed garments when they are done. Thank you for checking in with me!<br />

The dresses are pretty much complete. Using the illustration I posted, along with the basic One-Hour Dress directions courtesy of our good historical friend, Mary Brooks Picken, here are some pictures of my dress along the way.<br />
<br />
I trimmed the neckline with the fringe lace I showed you as one of the first trimmings I purchased for this dress. It seemed a little too simple though, so I added some flatback black Swarovski crystals (leftovers from a tutu I made years ago for my daughter).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYghIap4Qklhpydf0W_WrnUBxZxxb0D_NdZK8QnH7KHdvokihUgzBuvZRC_PHi5pG_ap-MBoQMkrrfc4sVxphDu8epnpJ0Q_NkzN-ddnY59Xgx1gTfMiCOZP-biaCEDutVH1WgaL9smbkQ/s1600/neckline1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYghIap4Qklhpydf0W_WrnUBxZxxb0D_NdZK8QnH7KHdvokihUgzBuvZRC_PHi5pG_ap-MBoQMkrrfc4sVxphDu8epnpJ0Q_NkzN-ddnY59Xgx1gTfMiCOZP-biaCEDutVH1WgaL9smbkQ/s320/neckline1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I added a lower lace skirt as in my illustration.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizfGFIH8N_5CZkMrA7mapmuJCUjeeAhym8MYE1hTDPcjqdJAkAnGOIVvrrqr8ggnA5u0LVuDJslIW1rmAZCaN-jNsAuzbGxeD1dZeOuAtCHy2Qo0dEhSn0I5hPL8PdRSwBWPWT6ntecxej/s1600/lacie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizfGFIH8N_5CZkMrA7mapmuJCUjeeAhym8MYE1hTDPcjqdJAkAnGOIVvrrqr8ggnA5u0LVuDJslIW1rmAZCaN-jNsAuzbGxeD1dZeOuAtCHy2Qo0dEhSn0I5hPL8PdRSwBWPWT6ntecxej/s320/lacie.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And lace sleeves which are open along the inner arm. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAi5J0kM4lMDtz8De4woYaSP-8N_6ZMvjTpglJsT2xbO1cDsYA5XgGM01WldwVkk4nSMoKYYrkQLVmGu_J4M8OyltMMw4QzntS53O_9_rRsSJ-cz6fNJYnaXSpkS0mh4BRWxGDu7b6onjS/s1600/dress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAi5J0kM4lMDtz8De4woYaSP-8N_6ZMvjTpglJsT2xbO1cDsYA5XgGM01WldwVkk4nSMoKYYrkQLVmGu_J4M8OyltMMw4QzntS53O_9_rRsSJ-cz6fNJYnaXSpkS0mh4BRWxGDu7b6onjS/s320/dress.jpg" width="179" /></a></div>
<br />
This buckle makes a lovely embellishment to the lace belt.<br />
<br />

<br />
I will be styling this with a long silver and crystal necklace, a crystal headpiece, a small evening bag, opera gloves (to be worn until dinner) and 1920's style T-strap shoes. I'll post pictures from the event of the dress in full glory. For once, I think the dress looks better on a live person than on Betsy, my ever trusty dress form!<br />

year for the blog! I sometimes find it
hard to believe I’ve been at this for so long.
I love producing this blog, even if it is only a sporadic thing due to
my many other commitments. Thanks for
stopping in when you get a chance to see what I write, when I get a chance!</span><br />
<span style="line-height: 115%;"><br /></span><span style="line-height: 115%;">This year
Downton Abbey comes to a close on Masterpiece.
Our local PBS affiliate is having a gala to celebrate the show and some
friends are going to the gala with us. I
have been working on my friend’s gown for a very long time. Chiffon fabric and hand beading make for
quite a project, but I think she’ll look lovely. Almost done with the beading and final
touches. </span><span style="line-height: 115%;"><br /></span><span style="line-height: 115%;">Now I have to
figure out what to wear myself. I love
the illustration here:</span><br />

Progress has been somewhat impeded by my new (but terrific) job. Here are some pictures of the embellishments so far. I don't want to add anything else until my friend tries it on and we get those beautiful bakelite clasps on.<br />

So, now completely enamored with 1920s style, I decided to give the famous "One Hour Dress" a try. The instructions are pretty ubiquitously available online. This is a Mary Brooks Pickens design created as "a smart, up-to-the-minute dress" which could be cut out, sewn and be ready to wear within an hour! Now, let's be real. For the seamstress of that era, who knew exactly what she wanted to accomplish, this may have been possible. However, I can say without a doubt, I've spent more than an hour so far. I made my dress from a recycled bedspread.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVvhbGd_BWxcw_PipsIiYK7UPmL7WSZjcp-dEPehQFifuXTgwP7Yx0-BC7gWrsSswa7p53SqoHFXld0KNDkm2tkGLlCw6wrHfM7fxsXsbcPh5Ixx0rtRjhj8EpoxaGYwOKZz_yf9yq6PBh/s1600/spread.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVvhbGd_BWxcw_PipsIiYK7UPmL7WSZjcp-dEPehQFifuXTgwP7Yx0-BC7gWrsSswa7p53SqoHFXld0KNDkm2tkGLlCw6wrHfM7fxsXsbcPh5Ixx0rtRjhj8EpoxaGYwOKZz_yf9yq6PBh/s320/spread.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This was a fussy, dry clean only bedspread my mom had been using just a few years ago. I cut the dress per the measurements and instructions of Ms. Pickens. I added a little pleat detail at the left hip.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-P2RnfJhzhEaJMK1n8OBwkDgGH92rfFgDW1bVLRSEUdGRJn6bNLKMTlQ-Tnz4k1IZL-21i-h3Ugf5FfwsxenPDxj1ldglzQxTRXwSnWmAkOxEX9MBpBUXlrafIuZ4-6ZSQ-GdyyDf0wwV/s1600/pleats.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-P2RnfJhzhEaJMK1n8OBwkDgGH92rfFgDW1bVLRSEUdGRJn6bNLKMTlQ-Tnz4k1IZL-21i-h3Ugf5FfwsxenPDxj1ldglzQxTRXwSnWmAkOxEX9MBpBUXlrafIuZ4-6ZSQ-GdyyDf0wwV/s320/pleats.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It is coming out very nicely. I just have to decide how to finish the sleeves and I will be done! I admit that I took advantage of hems already placed for the bedspread. Unfortunately, there is some sun fading on the fabric, so I will probably consider this one a wearable muslin and make more. It was incredibly easy and fun!<br />

A back drape is still to be attached, and then the embellishment process begins in earnest. I thought you might appreciate a quick look.<br />

I'm pretty happy with how it is coming together. I really hope my friend likes it. Just a little more to go and the final dress will be done. I do love this drop waist twenties style. I may have to make something similar for myself!<br />

I love estate sales, yard sales and
rummage sales (if you've ever read this blog before, you know this).
One of the things I buy frequently at these sales is sewing baskets.
Sadly, a sewist passes on, and her family has no earthly clue what to
do with her things. Often, whole sewing baskets can be found in
these sales, fully stocked with all sorts of great tools and notions,
left just the way the owner left it.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw7aQ60jUyxL4VQzerZnvJ51JT5o-b0EV1q5XlFxSrqxHODUg5lFE9XnYszoDxjVL-Z-405e-nSkVMdtXldZyTozo2Sg3EL6Y1Af1Rrv1xXgGZrbaKhXtsx0ylOv3LNvx_J3NRk__Ch2Xb/s1600/sewingbasket1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw7aQ60jUyxL4VQzerZnvJ51JT5o-b0EV1q5XlFxSrqxHODUg5lFE9XnYszoDxjVL-Z-405e-nSkVMdtXldZyTozo2Sg3EL6Y1Af1Rrv1xXgGZrbaKhXtsx0ylOv3LNvx_J3NRk__Ch2Xb/s320/sewingbasket1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I've acquired neatly organized baskets,
and ones that look as though the grandkids just pawed through it
looking for only they know what. All have their charms and treasures
within. One of the things I come across most frequently and
abundantly are hand sewing needles.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7HsGsZ1e6wZfDVSjvpfJI0ge2r_BwyobNxp_WBqN5VIos-jT13WNYWEE2v1fNfodRSXkOZhLO6EMS_yJOwNVxupprtRk3sJi2juh_ff03sSGbigE_FKbPe2D9LUQgSdH0KZUWqf0aiTMv/s1600/needle1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7HsGsZ1e6wZfDVSjvpfJI0ge2r_BwyobNxp_WBqN5VIos-jT13WNYWEE2v1fNfodRSXkOZhLO6EMS_yJOwNVxupprtRk3sJi2juh_ff03sSGbigE_FKbPe2D9LUQgSdH0KZUWqf0aiTMv/s320/needle1.jpg" width="199" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I will never have to purchase another
hand sewing needle at a conventional modern sewing store. I have
hundreds (maybe thousands) of these gems. Some will remain in their
wrappers unused, and others will be used in my work. Some will be
passed on to others via Etsy.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7eaQwTzFDNOhIBWApG69HZ0Iu_PKJzgPGDqI-AT5nd513dS-SVIErWgk6MCjH34phRAzWhhkX05AxyZS1m6YIAjzUEoB_ARpjkdAodl0ykn8ZuZDLv0LI1tbLJe-OrV85CJ8nLV0L0LGq/s1600/needle4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7eaQwTzFDNOhIBWApG69HZ0Iu_PKJzgPGDqI-AT5nd513dS-SVIErWgk6MCjH34phRAzWhhkX05AxyZS1m6YIAjzUEoB_ARpjkdAodl0ykn8ZuZDLv0LI1tbLJe-OrV85CJ8nLV0L0LGq/s320/needle4.jpg" width="187" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Hand sewing needles come in greater
variety than the uninitiated would think. Each needle is crafted for
a particular purpose. The most common is the “sharp”, used for
general hand work, with a round eye, a sharp point and a medium
length. Applique and crewel needles are used in embroidery and
surface design. Tapestry needles are used for needlepoint and other
canvas work. Betweens are hand quilting needles. Milliners needles
and beading needles are very long and are usually used for decorative
work. Darning needles are long with blunt points and used in fabric
repair and reweaving.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
And, of course there are specialty
needles for upholstery and leather work.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9AllFCuKZmHwfkJCKrw9ct7WwtQWrL_k4_itjxOxxOb381fgQ6Xu8MesZsMVmdZBOx5Ef2769Js5OCbj6GMb2zTMvaBGuR5SjGRzQSRk8t9WPOr_zhVyKWg2c4UGpBF48Yry4Pt2FslnF/s1600/needle6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9AllFCuKZmHwfkJCKrw9ct7WwtQWrL_k4_itjxOxxOb381fgQ6Xu8MesZsMVmdZBOx5Ef2769Js5OCbj6GMb2zTMvaBGuR5SjGRzQSRk8t9WPOr_zhVyKWg2c4UGpBF48Yry4Pt2FslnF/s320/needle6.jpg" width="210" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Each needle type
comes in a variety of sizes. The size is indicated <span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">by
one or more numbers on the manufacturer's packaging. The general
convention for sizing of needles, as with wire gauge, is that within
any given class of needle the length and thickness of a needle
</span></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><i>increases
</i></span></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">as
the size number </span></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><i>decreases</i></span></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">.
When a package contains a needle count followed by two size numbers
such as "20 Sharps 5/10" the second set of numbers
correspond to the range of sizes of needle within the packet, in this
case typically ten sharps needles of size 5 and ten of size 10 (for a
total of 20 needles).</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyHx0qh0vKgBxH_tDE1BpzvbZctaBWCbOmnxTOEFaCrhb9ceB7hCmzb5NdbSivY3AXx19hRQ4dY5gICMv5QIX3SMRGnzhW0JfejmmXPdfrjsZZ5F9dMD8LQkzT1uE04ciAS5giNZgGpSFI/s1600/needle7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyHx0qh0vKgBxH_tDE1BpzvbZctaBWCbOmnxTOEFaCrhb9ceB7hCmzb5NdbSivY3AXx19hRQ4dY5gICMv5QIX3SMRGnzhW0JfejmmXPdfrjsZZ5F9dMD8LQkzT1uE04ciAS5giNZgGpSFI/s320/needle7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The packaging of needles is also
fascinating, from ornate needle books, to advertising premiums. Some
of the packages feature great artwork, which seems so grandiose when
you consider that the contents are but humble sewing needles. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

I've been doing quite a lot of hand sewing lately for the Downton Dress. Between that and my estate sale habit, I have developed a new appreciation for the hand sewing needle!</div>

I blog about almost all of them, but what about the details that don't get shared? <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I went in search of Sewing Journals online, and there are several really nice ones. For instance, <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2013/05/sewing-journal-pages-pdf-download.html" target="_blank">here</a> at Escapades in Sewing, or <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/2013/03/make-a-sewing-journal/" target="_blank">here</a> at Sew Mama Sew. Like anything else, we all like to personalize or tweak, so I made my own to suit my own style. I'm sharing, but I fully realize this may not work for you. Maybe one of the others works better, or maybe you want to make your own, too! <br />
<br />
Here's an example of how mine looks when completed for a project, using my last project, the Alice Tank Top.<br />

I've had the book for some time, but have not had the time to try any of the patterns. The premise behind this book is that from variations on six basic patterns, one could make an entire wardrobe.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5wojXHgZsO9nJicKnkM24YBXvLxC6pC__cmHzantvxGocgPbLWbv5HWzVoKIpDphKVArcrHuV1_VhboqEDKyLZAWVBoY76paDJry8bcJ6LLPn2wkuY0hQMHJmAXKX7Hdk3-nDF_NU7UyJ/s1600/Magic-large.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5wojXHgZsO9nJicKnkM24YBXvLxC6pC__cmHzantvxGocgPbLWbv5HWzVoKIpDphKVArcrHuV1_VhboqEDKyLZAWVBoY76paDJry8bcJ6LLPn2wkuY0hQMHJmAXKX7Hdk3-nDF_NU7UyJ/s320/Magic-large.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided to first try the Alice Tank Top or tunic. The pattern is very cute and fits with my current Lagenlook style. It is pictured in the book styled with leggings, cowboy boots (not my thing, but ok if you like them) and a long thin infinity loop and dangle earrings. Cute!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAOWakPR-q1m1C7CstPKPyKeP6jCTsaV9LRy7S3Shn3eGAXhkgSBhlEP0hiU5baeYZ3iWCAIreAMDugJRVSCLJNT0PuDhMIQgVlSoBDQTQGpj1uOtyiBTfReBCYlj4qUSennTa-5ARPVkh/s1600/Alice-cutaway-d-imp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAOWakPR-q1m1C7CstPKPyKeP6jCTsaV9LRy7S3Shn3eGAXhkgSBhlEP0hiU5baeYZ3iWCAIreAMDugJRVSCLJNT0PuDhMIQgVlSoBDQTQGpj1uOtyiBTfReBCYlj4qUSennTa-5ARPVkh/s320/Alice-cutaway-d-imp.jpg" width="143" /></a></div>
<br />
Patterns are included on an accompanying CD. The same issue exists here as with any PDF pattern which prints in tiles and must be taped together. Care must be taken to align the papers precisely so as not to create and then propagate problems with sewing and fitting the pattern. The pattern went together "ok". There were a few spots where it did not match up perfectly and had to be muscled a little bit. Not the end of the world.<br />
<br />
After some initial fiddling with the pattern, all troubles ceased. The pattern went together like a dream, and was not at all difficult to sew. I opted to have the neck and armhole facings appear on the outside of the garment as a trim, and I used a solid fabric for the bodice potion of the top. I carefully saved the pattern pieces, so I can duplicate this top again.<br />
<br />

<br />
I really love the way the top came out, and I'm sure I'll wear it frequently. The black linen bodice was cut from fabric I had leftover in my stash from another project. The floral print on the bottom, and used for the facings as well, came from Fabric.com and was on sale. Here is Betsy, wearing my new Alice Tank Top. Oh, by the way, this is a pull on top, as people have asked about closures in the past, wondering if those were just not shown. No closures here!<br />
<br />

<br />
Stay tuned for more on the Downton Dress, and my Home Dec project, as well as more random sewing shenanigans when I need a break from the serious stuff!<br />
