Skirt Progress

My Edwardian skirt progresses.  I found a sueded cream fabric to use as a facing for the scallops.  The picture above shows the joining process.  I really like the result.  On the other hand, those buttons were giving me fits!  I had no idea the buttons wouldn't practically snap themselves together!  Now maybe I was doing something wrong, or maybe my fabric was too thick, but this was not easy.

And, I don't think they came out that great...however, I have 12 little buttons for the side of my skirt.  Have any of you ever used one of these kits?  How were your results?

Hopefully I will finish this tomorrow.  Please come back to see how this came out!  Thanks!

  1. I used one of those cheap kits, and let me tell you, my fingers hurt so much trying to get just one button to work out. After trying unsuccessfully for two hours, I finally quit and used a ready made button. However, I did succeed the first time I used the kit a year ago, and that time it only took me an hour to get one button done! I've seen YouTube tutorials on how to make covered buttons, but they didn't use the cheap kits. I think there is a reason for using better materials. Anyway, yours came out really nice. And if anyone is critical of them and notices they are possibly wonky, then I say they are too close to comfort. Plus, why are they invading the personal bubble. Nice job!

  2. Very pretty, your little fabric covered buttons! I'm sure the skirt will turn out lovely!
I've found that the buttons turn out nicer if you press the fabric into the little teethed sides of the front part before pressing in the back part. But I guess it really depends on the button kit you are using. Maybe another brand will work better for you. :)

    1. I live in a small town and our JoAnn's only had one type of kit. I'm going to look for a better one the next time I get to the "big city", or maybe I can find something online. My kit was so cheap there weren't even any teeth!
